A sound, sealed crown sheds water away from the stack instead of letting it pool and soak in, and a proper cap keeps the rain and snow out of the flue. Keep the top in good order, keep the joints pointed, and the freeze-thaw cycle has far less water to work with. Let the crown crack and the joints open, and the lakefront winters will take the chimney apart on their own schedule. The choice, in the end, is whether to manage the water or to pay for the damage it does.
